Look Out for False Prophets

Revelation 13:11-18

Pastor Stu opens this week's message with a warning as old as the church itself: deception is Satan's most effective tool. In Revelation 13, John describes a second beast rising from the earth - a False Prophet who performs signs and wonders to deceive the world into worshiping the first beast. From Paul's warnings to Timothy, to Jude's urgent plea to contend for the faith, to John's own instruction to test every spirit, Scripture consistently calls believers to watchfulness. This False Prophet's ultimate aim is idolatry - pulling our devotion away from Jesus toward the beast's counterfeit image, marking those loyal to it so that no one can buy or sell without it. But even the notorious number 666 is a description, not a mystery to fear: it falls short of the number 7, the number of divine perfection, because the beast - however deceptive - is nowhere close to displacing Jesus.

"Beloved, do not believe every spirit, but test the spirits to see whether they are from God, for many false prophets have gone out into the world...and every spirit that does not confess Jesus is not from God. This is the spirit of the antichrist, which you heard was coming and now is in the world already. Little children, you are from God and have overcome them, for he who is in you is greater than he who is in the world."

Lord, give me discernment to recognize what does not come from You. Thank You that the One who lives in me is greater than anything in this world. Keep my heart anchored in Christ alone.

Devotion 2: Known by Their Fruit

Matthew 7:15-17 (ESV)

"Beware of false prophets, who come to you in sheep's clothing but inwardly are ravenous wolves. You will recognize them by their fruits. Are grapes gathered from thornbushes, or figs from thistles? So, every healthy tree bears good fruit, but the diseased tree bears bad fruit."

What fruit is your own life producing right now, and does it point others toward Jesus?

Father, make me discerning toward teaching that sounds good but doesn't bear good fruit. Grow good fruit in my own life through Your Spirit. Let my life point clearly to Jesus.

Devotion 3: No Other Gods

Revelation 13:16-17 (ESV)

"Also it causes all, both small and great, both rich and poor, both free and slave, to be marked on the right hand or the forehead, so that no one can buy or sell unless he has the mark, that is, the name of the beast or the number of its name."

What "mark" - habit, pressure, or allegiance - do you feel pulling your loyalty away from Christ?

Jesus, You alone are worthy of my worship and allegiance. Free me from any idol competing for my devotion. Seal my heart to You alone.

Devotion 4: Stand Firm

Ephesians 6:13-17 (ESV)

"Therefore take up the whole armor of God, that you may be able to withstand in the evil day, and having done all, to stand firm. Stand therefore, having fastened on the belt of truth, and having put on the breastplate of righteousness, and, as shoes for your feet, having put on the readiness given by the gospel of peace. In all circumstances take up the shield of faith, with which you can extinguish all the flaming darts of the evil one; and take the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God."
