Life Together - Sept. 28

Acts 2:42-47; Hebrews 13:17

Pastor Stu explained that church membership is biblically grounded and essential for fostering a genuine Christian community. He emphasized that formal membership protects the flock, ensures accountability, and allows believers to live out the "one anothers" of Scripture.

Takeaways:
  • Church membership is biblically grounded, as evidenced by passages like Hebrews 13:17 and 1 Corinthians 5, which discuss church leadership and discipline.
  • Membership involves mutual commitment and submission - both to church leadership and to one another - for the purpose of spiritual growth and accountability.
  • The goal of church discipline is always restoration and the protection of the body of Christ, not punishment or exclusion for its own sake.

As we reflect on this message, let's consider how we can more fully engage in the life of our church community, whether we're long-time members or considering membership for the first time, and let's prayerfully consider how we can contribute to and benefit from the covenant community at Redemption Hills.

Three ideas to reflect on this week:

1. Submitting to Leadership for Spiritual Growth
Hebrews 13:17 - Obey your leaders and submit to them, for they are keeping watch over your souls, as those who will have to give an account. Let them do this with joy and not with groaning, for that would be of no advantage to you.

Reflection: Embracing the authority of church leaders as an integral part of my spiritual journey deepens my accountability and growth in faith.

Prayer Prompt: Lord, help me to humbly submit to the guidance of my church leaders, trusting that they are shepherding me towards a more Christ-like life.

2. Commitment to One Another: A Covenant of Love
Romans 12:4-5 - For as in one body we have many members, and the members do not all have the same function, so we, though many, are one body in Christ, and individually members one of another.

Reflection: My commitment to fellow believers in my church community strengthens my resolve to grow and support others in our shared faith journey.

Prayer Prompt: Heavenly Father, guide me to love and support my church family, honoring the covenant we share as members of the body of Christ.

3. Discipline for Restoration and Unity
1 Corinthians 5:5 - You are to deliver this man to Satan for the destruction of the flesh, so that his spirit may be saved in the day of the Lord.

Reflection: Understanding that church discipline serves to restore and protect the community encourages me to approach correction with a spirit of love and redemption.

Prayer Prompt: Gracious God, grant me the wisdom to see discipline not as a punishment but as a pathway to restoration and unity within your body, the Church.
