A Perspective on Eternity

Weekly Devotions: A Perspective on Eternity
Revelation 21:1-8
In Revelation 21:1-8, John lifts our eyes beyond the brokenness of this present age to the glorious destiny of everyone who belongs to Jesus Christ. After visions of judgment, spiritual warfare, and persecution, he sees a new heaven and a new earth, the holy city coming down out of heaven from God, and hears a voice from the throne announce that the dwelling place of God is with man. The final word over creation will not be sin, suffering, or death, but the Lord's own declaration: "Behold, I am making all things new." Christ Himself will wipe away every tear, death and mourning will be no more, and the thirsty will drink freely from the spring of the water of life. The passage closes with the covenant promise of adoption, "I will be his God and he will be my son," and a solemn warning of the second death for all who remain outside God's saving grace, calling every heart to come to Christ while He is calling.
Takeaways
- God will renew His creation; the world is broken, but it is not beyond the reach of its Creator.
- God will dwell with His people; our future rests on His grace and faithfulness, not on our own efforts.
- God will wipe away every tear; Jesus knows our sorrow, and death and pain will not have the final word.
- God will fulfill His promises; He freely gives the water of life and adopts all who trust in Christ as His children.
Application for This Week
This week, let the promise of the new creation shape the way you face what is in front of you. When the news is heavy or your own heart is troubled, remember that history is not wandering aimlessly and your life is not beyond God's providential care. Practice now the life of the coming city by loving one another, encouraging the weary, and welcoming sinners with the message of grace. Whatever tears you carry, bring them to the Savior who wept at Lazarus's tomb and who has promised that the former things will pass away.
Four ideas to reflect on this week:
Devotion 1: The Groaning Will End
Romans 8:22-23 (ESV)
"For we know that the whole creation has been groaning together in the pains of childbirth until now. And not only the creation, but we ourselves, who have the firstfruits of the Spirit, groan inwardly as we wait eagerly for adoption as sons, the redemption of our bodies."
Reflection Question
Where do you feel the groaning of this broken world most sharply right now, and how does the promise of a renewed creation change the way you carry it?
Prayer Prompt
Thank God that the brokenness you see is not beyond His reach. Ask Him to strengthen your hope as you wait eagerly for the redemption He has promised, and to help you live this week as one who belongs to the new creation.
Devotion 2: The Dwelling Place of God
Revelation 21:3 (ESV)
"And I heard a loud voice from the throne saying, "Behold, the dwelling place of God is with man. He will dwell with them, and they will be his people, and God himself will be with them as their God.""
Reflection Question
In what area of loneliness or difficulty do you most need to remember that the God who will dwell with His people forever is already with you by His Spirit?
Prayer Prompt
Praise God that He has always drawn near to His people, from the garden to the tabernacle to the Word made flesh. Ask Him to make you aware of His presence today and to use you to show His love to the people around you.
Devotion 3: Every Tear Wiped Away
Revelation 21:4 (ESV)
"He will wipe away every tear from their eyes, and death shall be no more, neither shall there be mourning, nor crying, nor pain anymore, for the former things have passed away."
Reflection Question
What sorrow, loss, or pain are you carrying right now that you need to bring honestly to the Savior who knows and feels it?
Prayer Prompt
Bring your grief to Jesus, who wept with those who mourned and bore the curse of sin on the cross. Thank Him that death and sorrow will not have the final word, and ask Him for comfort and hope until the day He wipes every tear away.
Devotion 4: Drink Freely
Revelation 21:6-7 (ESV)
"And he said to me, "It is done! I am the Alpha and the Omega, the beginning and the end. To the thirsty I will give from the spring of the water of life without payment. The one who conquers will have this heritage, and I will be his God and he will be my son.""
Reflection Question
What have you been relying on to satisfy your soul instead of coming to Christ for the water of life?
Prayer Prompt
Confess the ways you have tried to quench your thirst apart from Christ. Thank the Father that He gives life freely and has made you His child, and ask Him to fix your eyes on Jesus as you look toward your inheritance.
