The Call to Follow Jesus

John 1:35-51

In this passage, we witness the first gathering of Jesus' disciples, and no two of them come to Him the same way. One hears a testimony and follows. One is invited by a brother. One is personally sought out. One wrestles with doubt before believing. Yet every road leads to the same Savior. Behind each different story stands one glorious reality: Jesus calls His own. Salvation begins with God-Christ seeks sinners before sinners seek Christ, and grace always precedes faith.

Devotion 1: Come and See

John 1:38-39

"Jesus turned and saw them following and said to them, 'What are you seeking?' And they said to him, 'Rabbi' (which means Teacher), 'where are you staying?' He said to them, 'Come and you will see.' So they came and saw where he was staying, and they stayed with him that day, for it was about the tenth hour."

Reflection Question

What are you seeking from Jesus right now-comfort, answers, purpose, or simply Him?

Prayer Prompt

Ask God to reveal Himself to you today, not just as an idea to understand but as a person to know. Thank Him that His invitation to "come and see" is still open. Ask for the desire to abide with Him, not just learn about Him.

Devotion 2: Unable to Stay Silent

John 1:40-42

"One of the two who heard John speak and followed Jesus was Andrew, Simon Peter's brother. He first found his own brother Simon and said to him, 'We have found the Messiah' (which means Christ). He brought him to Jesus. Jesus looked at him and said, 'You are Simon the son of John. You shall be called Cephas' (which means Peter)."

Reflection Question

Who in your life might God be prompting you to quietly bring to Jesus, the way Andrew brought Peter?

Prayer Prompt

Thank God for the person who first introduced you to Jesus, whether through words or example. Ask for courage to do the same for someone else this week, trusting that ordinary faithfulness is exactly what God uses.

Devotion 3: Chosen, Not Choosing

John 15:16

"You did not choose me, but I chose you and appointed you that you should go and bear fruit and that your fruit should abide, so that whatever you ask the Father in my name, he may give it to you."

Reflection Question

How does it change your view of yourself to know that God's call on your life began with His initiative, not your merit?

Prayer Prompt

Praise God that your standing with Him rests on His sovereign choice, not your track record. Ask Him to help you rest in that security rather than striving to earn what He has freely given.

Devotion 4: Fully Known, Still Called

John 1:47-48

"Jesus saw Nathanael coming toward him and said of him, 'Behold, an Israelite indeed, in whom there is no deceit!' Nathanael said to him, 'How do you know me?' Jesus answered him, 'Before Philip called you, when you were under the fig tree, I saw you.'"

What is one area of your life you've assumed might disqualify you from following Jesus closely-and how does His complete knowledge of you change that?

Prayer Prompt

Thank God that nothing about your past or your struggles surprises Him. Ask Him to help you live today in the confidence that His love for you preceded your performance and will outlast your failures.
